CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The huge crowd of elves parted and Flea watched the reindeer quickly accelerating. Within seconds, Comet and the sleek reindeer crossed the North Pole center, coming dangerously close to where Flea stood with his friends. But before the three of them had to scramble out of the way, the reindeer began to climb into the sky, pulling the huge sleigh behind them. The sight was nothing short of amazing. Flea, Minko and Rome were closer to the action than any other elves. Flea wanted to see Santa but couldn’t take his eyes off the reindeer, watching them directly overhead.

The reindeer didn’t fly as much as they ran on air. Their feet continued to pump furiously like they were running, silvery sparks shimmering beneath them. The takeoff proved exactly like last year’s delivery, as Comet and the reindeer turned near the elf dorm and climbed even higher in the opposite direction, flying way above the cheering elf crowd. But before the sleigh disappeared into the night sky, Santa did something that made the crowd cheer even louder, especially Wrench and Grinder.

He activated the blinking turn signal before banking to the left.

“We installed that!” Wrench could be heard yelling excitedly. “And just wait until you see what we do this year!”

The sleigh turned away from the direction of the South Pole Army. The reindeer suddenly shot forward and were gone, only a trail of falling sparkles left in their wake. Compared to the gift delivery reindeer team, the speed of this team was amazing. Though Flea hated to admit it, he now understood why Scruffy had been left off the team.

Flea glanced up at the huge clock on the toy factory wall, shocked to see how late it was.

“It’s 11:45 already,” he said, his heart sinking as the minute hand switched to 11:46. “Is something wrong? Will there be a problem with Christmas if time isn’t slowed by 11:59?”

“Why wouldn’t time be slowed by then?” Minko asked. He seemed more confused than concerned, which in turn confused Flea.

“Santa’s first trip doesn’t take very long,” Rome explained. “That’s why the fastest reindeer are chosen for this job while Dasher and the stronger deer are tasked with pulling the heavy sleigh full of presents.”

“But they can travel that fast?” Flea asked.

“Didn’t you see how quickly they took off once they reached the right altitude?” Minko asked. “I think that trip around the world would be much more fun than the delivery trip.”

Flea couldn’t wrap his mind around how any animal could circle the globe in a matter of minutes. But if there was one thing he’d learned during his time at the North Pole, it was that the impossible wasn’t quite so impossible here. If his friends said this first trip didn’t last long, Flea believed them. But something else about the takeoff seemed strange to him, too.

“I noticed that Santa turned the sleigh away from the South Pole Army. Would it be dangerous for him to fly above them?”

“I doubt it,” Rome said.
